As I placed my grocery order for pickup today, I was shocked to see that a dozen eggs now cost around 32 cents each. Two cartons of 18 eggs set me back $11.44.
I can either get a second job or raise laying hens.
Y’all think I’m joking but I’m seriously considering it. I’m reading articles like this one from Tractor Supply, and contemplating what breed is best. Looks like I can pick up a pre-built coop that will hold 6 hens for around $600 bucks. Starting there, it would take about a year to clear that with the current price of eggs. That is… if my chickens are productive. 🙂
Once upon a time, my neighbors had chickens.
Toddler Colette LOVED them and tried everything to get her little hands on one.
I wasn’t a fan of the rooster noises or the worry that my dogs would eat one. But back then… eggs weren’t almost $12 bucks for 36!
