so close that i’m thinking about flooring

Apr 29, 2023

Yesterday was supposed to be the last day for the contractors here — at least until the pool is installed and I need decking — but no! The door leading to the upper deck that required a custom casing didn’t go as planned. That’s to be continued on Monday.

In the meantime, I’m thinking about flooring for the room that now has walls.

It’s time to identify the room that had no walls as something. It’s a family room… sort of. But there’s one of those upstairs. It’s an office… sort of. That’s where the computers are. I guess “gathering room” fits. I dunno. Anyway… it needs something done to cover regular ole’ concrete that won’t interfere with the radiant heat.

Laminate?

I can’t do laminate planks that look like wood. There’s enough of that look in here already. I could do anything that doesn’t look like wood though and I tried out a couple options on the Home Depot site:

Acid-stain?

I’m one of those people that like flooring to be consistent throughout a space. This room is divided as such that it doesn’t REALLY flow to the rest of the house. There’s a door between the original living space and this room (great for smokers to keep the nasty out of the rest of the house) so I’m not married to the idea of keeping it all the same.

When I got a rough estimate for laminate — not installed and nothing required for the installation — the cost for this room was around $3000. I figure the final amount would be around $5 grand total to complete. OUCH! The cost to acid stain it like the rest of the house would be close to FREE. There are gallons of this crap in the garage.

Conclusion.

When it warms up enough to open everything up, I’m going to acid stain out here. My labor is the only cost… except for the wear and tear on my back and a few rollers. If I hate it, laminate can come later.
