our old house in the city is up for grabs

Oct 31, 2023

Just a little over a year ago, we sold the house in Seymour. Today, the buyers are wanting to be sellers. It’s a GREAT house — I’m not sure why they’d want to move already. They bumped the price… but I don’t see how it’s enough to cover all the changes they made — certainly not if that’s a new roof.

Updates and just MY opinions…

I think the outside was a big improvement. We talked about painting the brick, but didn’t want to maintain it. Getting rid of the shrubs and adding the awnings and window boxes was a definite win.

The formal living room is very different than we had. I personally don’t think one is that much better than the other, just different.

The one thing I notice throughout their reno is that all the walnut trim has been painted. From the crown molding to the doors and windows… all the wood is gone. When we first had the house appraised, the broker suggested we NOT paint the trim/molding because it cheapens the value. Because you can buy fake white wood, painting the real stuff is discouraged.

The family room looks a lot “classier” than my choice of colors but it’s also a whole lot more bland, too. I like it both ways.

Everyone has a different style and we can’t all agree on everything, right?

Here’s where our tastes in decor split. The primary place where my taste is the total opposite of the current owners is in the kitchen. I like the cabinets and I like the island… and I even like the countertops — but I’m OUT on fake brick. Real brick in an old home I love, but this isn’t the same. It’s in the 1/2 bath too.

I think it’s a good quality of fake brick — it’s not the paneling type — but it’s not a bona fide brick wall either.

And when I said earlier that they painted all the wood? They painted ALL the wood.

It’s a GREAT house in an amazing neighborhood.

I truly hope they get every penny they’re asking for — $349,000. And please remember, the person doing the critique here is an old woman that lives in a barn that looks like a garage who is slapping dye on concrete. 🙂
