I LOVE gerbera daisies. While native to South Africa, you can grow them right here in southern Indiana but they won’t be perennials. They simply don’t like winter temps below 45° F.
Gerberas grow best in USDA hardiness zones 9 and 10.
Sad to say, Crothersville is zone 6b… much too cold for them to last even with winter protection. Heck, winter is almost over and it’s cooler than that here right now.
Want to know your zone?
The USDA’s plant hardiness zone map is available online. You simply type in your zip code and your specific zone will magically appear in 2 seconds flat.
Interesting to note that from 2012 to 2023, 47229 has moved from 6a to 6b zone. The USDA says the temperature change during that time for this area is +4° F. The map is based on 30-year averages and incorporates data from 13,412 weather stations… I’d say it’s accurate.
No gerberas here — I’ll be planting marigolds instead.
After reading that marigolds and chrysanthemums repel stink bugs — and gerbera daisies do not — looks like I’ll be planting stinky plant selections even though I don’t like them nearly as much.
