I have barndo HVAC woes. The techs from a local heating and air business were here again yesterday and as of right now, nothing is working out of 6 heads and 2 units.
Testing and more…
Yesterday, three guys showed up. One of them was the same as was here before; one didn’t stick around; and one was obviously the expert. They found only one head was leaking refrigerant. That’s the ONLY good news.
- A new board was ordered for the upstairs outside unit.
- $700 bucks and not sure it will fix the problem
- The current board is the wrong one. It was just put in October of last year and is for a unit with 4 heads, not 3.
- The wiring on the downstairs is wrong.
- The installer used wire that wasn’t enough to carry the amps required.
- Replacing said wire means they have to remove metal outside and start from scratch.
- The installer used wire that wasn’t enough to carry the amps required.
Take my money.
Fixing what I have is going to be expensive. Not only did the last dude (hired by the sellers) install a board that was wrong, he also charged for cleaning the units and this team says that simply could NOT be true.
Replacing what I have would be even more costly. Techs said the average cost to install new units and heads would run around $15,000.00.
Let’s talk about those 2 feet.
Once Mr. Boss Tech pointed out what could’ve been done, it was clearly what I would’ve chosen if I’d have been the barndo builder. Coming down 2 feet of ceiling space — making the ceilings still 14′ tall — and installing ductwork in that space would’ve meant the barndo could have a central heating and air unit instead of mini-splits.
