females don’t need to attract mates nor establish territory

During the brittle cold days we had in the Ville a couple weeks ago, I hung a bird feeder filled with tasty seeds. The frozen ground didn’t offer much insofar as food to forage for the warm-blooded vertebrates.

First photo of a visiting bird.

I didn’t see a bird eating at the feeder until this morning. I snapped a photo through the storm door knowing the opportunity would be brief. Merida was pushing to get outside. The following is not the best photo, but I hope I’ll have better luck in the coming days.

Male cardinals are known for their vibrant red plumage, while females are generally a more subdued brownish color. The striking red coloration of male cardinals serves multiple purposes, including attracting mates and establishing territory.

Evidently, females don’t need to impress the dudes and they don’t care about territory. 🙂

Brain food: Birds are of the class Aves. Avians are characterized by feathers, toothless beaked jaws, and the laying of hard-shelled eggs.
